COMPARISION OF CLINICIAL RESULTS BETWEEN CONVENTION AND LASER-ASSISTED UPPP

Abstract
Sleep apnea syndrome(SAS) .is a syndrome of multiple symptom complex ranging from simple snoring to life=threatening cardiopulmonary complications. It is most prevalent in males with an incidence rate of 1-4% in an adult population.
Since the introduction of Uvulopalatopharyngoplasty by Fujita (1981) and Simmons (1983 ), there has been many advancements in the surgical treatment of SAS. However, studies have shown that the conventional method of uvulopalatopharyngoplasty produced unsatisfactory results with a long recovery period. Since the Kamami(1988) introduced laser uvulopalatoplasty which received wide attention in the treatment of SAS, however, this procedure also had many limitations such as soft palate scar-ring and nasopharyngeal stenosis.
Recently, with the introduction of laser treatment for the SAS the interest in the convention-al procedure has considerably decreased. Here, we tried to compare the advantages and disadvantages ¢¥of laser and conventional surgical treatment of SAS in concert with the recent trend of decreasing popularity for conventional treatment with the introduction of laser uvulopalatoplasty.
Study groups included 50 cases of convention-ally treated and 50 cases of laser treated SAS patients between the peroid of September 1992 to August 1995 from department of otolaryngology-head and neck surgery, Korea university, Anam hospital. These two groups were compared for their postoperative results.
Immediate postoperative bleeding and pain was more common in the conventional group with a longer recovery peroid. There was no significant differences for the delayed postoperative bleeding and pain in the two groups. Incidence of postoperative nasal regurgitation and voice change was higher in the conventional
